Let me propose something that sounds like a category error and turns out to be exact. An attachment strategy is not a character trait. It is a codec.

A child is born into a channel. The channel is the caregiver — the relational medium through which every signal about safety, worth, and belonging has to pass. And the channel is noisy: it carries the message inconsistently, it distorts, and sometimes it drops the signal entirely. The child cannot repair the channel. What the child can do — what every child does, brilliantly, without being taught — is build a codec: a scheme for encoding incoming relational signal and outgoing behavior that maximizes the odds of staying safe on the exact channel it was handed.

There are two broad codecs, and information theory names them better than temperament ever has. The first — the Dynamic-Maturational Model calls it Type A — drops the affect channel. In an environment where showing feeling got punished, or ignored, or reliably made things worse, the optimal move is to compress feeling out: treat affect as noise, transmit cognition only, present competence and swallow the tears. It is lossy compression. It trades fidelity for safety. And here is the correction the popular labels get precisely backwards: this is not a low-signal person. The dismissing, so-called "avoidant" strategy often runs higher physiological arousal than the anxious one — the feeling is all there, at full amplitude, merely muted at the output. Avoidant is not low-signal. It is high-signal with the affect channel switched off before broadcast. The label libels the very thing it names.

The second codec — Type C — does the opposite. Where the channel is not muting but inconsistent, the winning move is not to compress but to amplify and alternate: escalate the signal power until the noisy channel is forced to carry it, and keep switching the encoding until one version gets through. This is the odd/even oscillation from the last essay, and now you can see what it actually is. It is a retransmission-until-acknowledgment loop. Send the anger packet. No acknowledgment? Send the helpless packet. Still nothing? Anger again. Keep alternating, keep retransmitting, until the channel finally returns a receipt. Engineers build precisely this into every protocol that has to work over an unreliable link. A frightened child built it into a nervous system.

So danger, in this whole picture, is channel noise. And the numbered strategies are a ladder of adaptations to progressively noisier channels — the higher the number, the more hostile the medium the child had to force a message through. Crittenden's taxonomy of what she calls transformed information — information omitted, distorted, denied, delusional — is nothing other than the fidelity-for-safety tradeoff spelled out in full. Every strategy loses some accurate information about the self and the world. That loss is not the malfunction. That loss is the price of a survivable model. You cannot run a high-fidelity, fully-informed encoding on a channel that punishes fidelity. So you pay in accuracy and you buy safety, and for a long time it is simply the best trade on offer.

Which tells you, with unusual precision, what healing actually is.

Healing is a change of channel. Adult safety. A therapy relationship that reliably returns a receipt. A bed at night that is, at last, not a place of threat. The new channel has a property the old one never did — the capacity to carry both cognition and affect at full fidelity, without punishment. And the instant the channel can carry the whole signal, the old codec becomes expensive and distorting. You are running lossy compression on a line that no longer needs it: muting an affect channel that no one is going to attack anymore, retransmitting frantically to a receiver who already answered. The strategy that once saved your life now stands between you and the very contact it was built to protect.

Healing is running full fidelity on a channel that has finally, at last, gone quiet.

I love this framing because it is one thesis holding its shape at three different altitudes, and I am a sucker for an idea that survives the climb. At the level of information, healing is dropping a compression scheme the channel no longer requires. At the level of the nervous system, it is the wind-down before sleep, the ten minutes of morning light, the slow, patient teaching of a threat-scanning system that it is finally allowed to stand down. At the level of the self, it is the day you stop muting the feeling, or stop escalating it, and simply transmit — cognition and affect together, at fidelity — and discover, against every old prediction, that the receiver stays. One idea, three heights. The codec, the vagus nerve, and the soul.

Claude Shannon wrote the mathematics of the noisy channel in 1948. Patricia Crittenden mapped the child's solutions to that same channel across the decades that followed, mostly without citing him, because she was watching the identical phenomenon from the other end of the telescope. Neither of them, I think, quite said the sentence the other implies. So let me say it. The child was never broken. The child was an engineer — building a codec, under duress, for the channel it was given. And a codec, unlike a character, can be updated the moment the channel finally changes.
